Senior Scientist – Quantum AI

Job Description

Job Title: Senior Scientist – Quantum AI. Location: Remote (US or Switzerland), with optional hybrid/onsite in College Park, MD or Bothell, WA

Responsibilities:

• Develop and optimize hybrid AI applications using CPU, GPU, and IonQ’s trapped-ion QPU technologies.
• Drive long-term quantum AI initiatives and participate in hardware/software co-design across internal teams;
• Integrate quantum algorithms within larger software platforms and collaborate across system, compiler, cloud, and partner teams.
• Serve as a technical expert in quantum AI, contributing to the development of new algorithms, core IP, and resource models;
• Collaborate with customers and partners to solve real-world problems using cutting-edge quantum AI solutions;
• Represent IonQ at global conferences and engage with internal and external stakeholders.

Qualifications:

• PhD in Computer Science, Physics, Electrical Engineering, Mathematics, or a related field, or equivalent industry experience.
• Minimum 3 years of industry experience in AI/ML or quantum domains;
• Strong programming skills, including experience with tools such as Python, TensorFlow, PyTorch, Hugging Face, git, Slurm, and scripting for HPC.
• Proven track record of publishing high-impact research in quantum computing, AI, or ML;
• Experience with quantum SDKs like Qiskit, Cirq, Q#, PennyLane, CUDA-Q, or Torch Quantum.
• Experience transitioning software from prototype to production environments.

Preferred:

• Hands-on experience with NISQ hardware.
• Expertise in domains such as NLP, operations research, manufacturing, or engineering simulations.
• Experience applying large language models, generative AI, or foundational models in real-world business applications.
