Photonics Fabrication Engineer

Job Description

Job Title: Photonics Fabrication Process Engineer. Location: Remote (United States)

Responsibilities:

  • Develop and optimize fabrication processes for integrated photonic devices using crystalline electro-optic materials such as thin film lithium niobate.
  • Independently manage wafer lot processing through coordination with foundry partners;
  • Design and execute experiments for process improvement and optimization;
  • Perform metrology and failure analysis to troubleshoot and improve fabrication yield and performance.
  • Collaborate with internal teams and external partners including design and integration engineers;
  • Stay current with developments in photonics fabrication and apply new innovations quickly.
  • Travel occasionally (up to 20%) to partner sites and facilities.

Qualifications:

  • PhD in physics, materials science, electrical engineering, or a related field.
  • Hands-on experience in semiconductor or integrated photonics fabrication.
  • Expertise in etching waveguides in lithium niobate or similar materials;
  • Proficiency in metrology and analysis tools such as SEM, TEM, AFM, ellipsometry, and others.
  • Knowledge of photonic components like modulators, waveguides, switches, resonators, etc.
  • Strong programming and data analysis skills (Python, MATLAB, JMP);
  • Excellent problem-solving, teamwork, and communication skills.

Preferred:

  • 5+ years of experience in integrated photonics fabrication using electro-optic materials.
  • Proven results in reducing optical loss in photonic components;
  • Familiarity with the full hardware development cycle and working in a fabless environment.
  • Experience managing external partners or vendors, especially semiconductor/phtonics foundries.
  • Background in photonic quantum computing hardware development.
  • Proficiency in Mandarin.
