Job Description
Job Title: Principal Device Theorist. Location: Berkeley, CA
Responsibilities:
- Lead the theoretical modeling of superconducting qubits to improve quantum processor performance.
- Collaborate with experimental teams to enhance gate fidelity, coherence, readout efficiency, and noise mitigation.
- Develop and implement circuit QED models to simulate entangling gates and QPU dynamics;
- Conduct pulse-level simulations and apply optimal control methods to refine quantum operations;
- Design tools for analyzing experimental data, identifying anomalies, and simulating open quantum systems.
- Contribute to the modeling of error budgets for NISQ algorithms and quantum error correction protocols.
- Provide strategic technical input to leadership for roadmap planning and decision-making.
- Mentor and help grow a high-performing team of quantum theorists;
- Work across multiple disciplines including fabrication, software, circuit design, and electronics.
Qualifications:
- Ph.D. in Physics, Applied Physics, Electrical Engineering, or a related field.
- 4+ years of relevant postdoctoral or industrial experience.
- Proven leadership in a technical or research environment;
- Strong background in superconducting circuits and gate-based quantum computing.
- Experience with quantum trajectory simulations, noise modeling, and benchmarking protocols.
- Proficient in Python for scientific computing and simulation;
- Effective communicator with a collaborative approach to cross-functional work.
Preferred:
- Expertise in practical quantum algorithm implementation and error correction techniques.
- Track record of innovative research in academic or startup settings.
